Vegtam the Wanderer

The All-Father, Odin, spent years wandering the worlds in search of the wisdom needed to lead his gods. Naming himself Vegtam and clothing himself in dark blue rags, so as to avoid discovery, he quested to find the true source of knowledge and wisdom. He came upon Mimir’s Well, the source of Wisdom, for which he needed to sacrifice an eye to drink from. As he drank, Odin saw the sorrows that would befall the lives of men and Gods – Past, Present, and Future. It is for this reason, that Odin never smiles.

Life

I can’t begin to count how many times some blazingly, ignorant try-hard has spewed some shit similar to, “Get out of your mom’s basement and get a life you 50 year old virgin!” I mean, come on kids. Get some fucking originality. However, this does happen to be the subject of today’s chapter. Not the terrible and horribly predictable insults, but getting an actual life. What, exactly, does get a life mean? Wanna-be Internet Tough Guys define it as seeing the sunlight and having sex with a bunch of random girls (like they all do). However, only my definition matters, so don’t beat yourself up over it. I see “life”, in the sense of what we’re talking about, as doing something that has purpose and pleases you. These are things that make the best of your time and propel your life, allowing you to do things you enjoy, either alone or in the company of others that wish to enjoy it with you. You can accomplish this without ever seeing the light of day, or the twinkle of night. However, this is about overcoming social inhibitions, and unfortunately, you have to get out of the house to do that. When you do these things that make the best of you, you’re giving yourself a number of incredible things that people never really think of: An identity, depth, and sense of self. What the hell are these things and why would I need them to succeed socially? WOW kid, that was an awesome question. Really, good work. Praises aside, the reason that these are so important is because they define you as a person. Think about this for a second. Invariably when you meet a new person the question will come up about who you are. When someone asks “What do you do?”, how do you answer them? How would a doctor answer them? He may say, “Well I’m a surgeon.” A Lawyer? “Well I’m a defense attorney.” But, beyond that, a lot of people have no way to describe themselves. Unless your job is awesomely awesome, and you’re well known for it (Kanye West for example), why should that be the only thing that makes up your identity?

Example:
  • Girl – So Njord, what do you do?
  • Njord – Njord is the Norse God of Awesome, the sea, winds, fish, and prosperity.
  • Girl – Interesting…

Of course, this is good enough to get any woman to bed, but what if I wanted something more? Like a relationship.

Example 2:
  • Girl – So Njord, what do you do?
  • Njord – Hm..let’s play a game. 3 facts and a fib. Njord will give you 3 things about him and a lie, and if you choose the lie, you lose.
  • Girl – Kay, I’m game.
  • Njord – So…Njord is..the Norse god of Awesomeness. Njord is an aspiring author. Njord is gay. And….Njord helps guys with their social problems.
  • Girl – Hmm…it’s so hard…uhhhh…ohh god..
  • Njord – BITCH, I’M GAY IS THE LIE! Don’t fuck around.
  • Girl – Ahaha look at you getting all mad. Stop being such a …

Umm…said too much. Anyways, look at all the information I gave about myself without tying my name down to some vague job. Now she has a lot to look forward to, along with a myriad of subjects to take the conversation direction in.

Attraction

So why would I want to do this when speaking with the opposite sex? Well one reason being, it’s attractive. How? Women are attracted to ambition, only because it shows that you’re going to go somewhere and potentially be someone. The college quarterback has women flocking to him for this reason. Every guy should know that money is attractive to women, but it’s not like that college kid has money. However, what is wealth? Nothing but the realization of your ambitions, and that quarterback usually has the ambition to use his position to get a great education (with that a great job) or go to the NFL where wealth is promised. It’s not that all women are gold diggers, but wealth fulfills some physical and emotional securities that women want and need in relationships. So, from that we can infer that showing ambitions might just be beneficial when it comes down to social interactions. Back to those 3 things that life gives you:

  • Identity – It allows you to define yourself as something other than your name and profession. Even when you don’t have a profession, you have other things to describe who you are and why you’re so awesome.
  • Depth – It creates a deeper level of yourself that others can connect on. It makes you a Transformer-More than meets the eye.
  • Sense of Self – It lets you discover who you are: Your limits, strengths, weaknesses, what you enjoy, what you want to make of yourself, and why you want these things.

Identity shows others who you are on a physical level. It’s what makes you fun, exciting, and interesting. Depth is what rally gets to women throughout the relationship. They love a mystery. Finding out more and more incredible things about you as they spend more time digging just makes you that much more of an incredible prize. Sense of Self is really you just figuring out what your life entails, and how you want to live it. It makes you more self-aware knowing what you can and cannot do.

The Real

Now that you know the qualities that having a life can give and show to you, how are you going to get one? Go out and live it! Get out and try new things to see what you enjoy in life. Thrills, adventures, physical activities, social interactions, writing, singing, painting, playing the piano, dancing, playing video games, crafts, dirt bike racing – ANYTHING, but get out there and see what you love. Learn what you body is craving for and fulfill it. Search for your limits, test your body and mind, and make you who you really want to be. Add a definition behind that name and make it great. Do things that makes others say “Wow, holy hell!” after you answer that silly ass question of “What do you do?”. It’s all up to you to kill your fears and inhibitions and go make that “something” out of yourself that is more than great.

The Fourth Stone – Life

Having a life extends outside of what others try to judge you as. You can be a nerd, or a geek, and still have a life. You can spend all day on the computer in your mom’s basement, and still have a life. However these cases are only true if these people are fulfilling their true life dream. If they’re making themselves undoubtedly happy with the direct their lives are taking, then they have no reason to fear the judgment of others. Do the same for yourself. Make sure you’re doing all you can to make yourself truly happy. Yes, you may be young, but why waste time to make yourself awesome? The true secret behind the wisdom of the Norse is that we know what it takes to g out there and take life by the horns. We spend our time doing great things that do nothing but enhance our lives. Choose now as the time to make yourself the priority, and live your life in a way that would make the greatest of Valhallan Warriors quiver with envy.

Plains of Asgard

Very simple.

  • Write down how you would define yourself.
  • Add more to that definition, as in, what would you like your life to be at the moment.
  • Use those as goals, and create logical paths to reach those goals. Detail them immensely.
  • Start working to reach those goals, and strike out each of those paths as you fulfill them.
  • Try to start 3 new, completely diverse hobbies. Doesn’t matter what it is, but stick with it. If you find you don’t like it, replace it with another.
